UAVs, more commonly known as drones, are becoming more widely used every day. Where they used to be only available for the government, we now start to see them more and more often in our daily lives. Drones are unmanned vehicles controlled from the distance used in a variety of fields. They can be used for taking pictures or filming events from a different angle, finding missing persons, farming, construction or even assessing emergency situations. Enthusiasts that own their own drones use them for fun or as a hobby, to film or explore for example, but sometimes they can cause unwanted problems. There have been several cases of drones causing privacy laws infringements.

Aircraft pilots and drones

But privacy is not the only trouble with drones, they can be a very serious hazard for aircraft pilots. Small drones are generally not visible to the eye of the pilot and they are not detected by onboard surveillance equipment or ATC facilities. Drones can get sucked into an engine or collide with an aircraft which eventually can cause serious damage or even fatalities.

With all these unidentified vehicles in the air, the risk of a mid-air collision increases considerably. To make sure no collisions or problems occur while flying, it is important that all aircrafts are aware of the location, speed and altitude of other aircrafts nearby. With Air Navigation for UAVs, drones are no longer hidden objects in the air and they will be visible to airplane pilots. Drones will be able to transmit their location and be aware of nearby airspaces and waypoints.

Communication between UAV's and other aircrafts

We developed four services to improve the communication from and to drone operators. Air Navigation for UAVs is a set of web services aimed towards manufacturers and operators of unmanned aerial vehicles. These services use the same database that powers Air Navigation Pro for iOS and Android and Air Navigation Desktop for Mac OS X.

With this feature you will be able to receive information about your surroundings. An example of this would be nearby airspaces.

An airspace is a pre-established area where aircrafts are requested to comply with certain rules. If there are airspaces that are lower than a certain altitude, this service will display them automatically. You will be warned if you are entering a specific airspace where another vehicle might be flying or where you are not allowed to enter. [Technical Specification...]

This feature provides you with information about landing areas, i.e. landing strips or runways in an airport where an aircraft might land. The landing fields within a given area will be displayed and you will be able to adjust your flight route if necessary. [Technical Specification...]

With our Advisory Activity service you will be able to send out notices to other aircrafts using Air Navigation Pro. This allows you to notify other pilots about where you will be flying, so that they won't be surprised by unexpected vehicles in the air. The Advisory Activities will only be visible to vehicles using Air Navigation pro. [Technical Specification...]

This feature helps you send out information such as your speed, location or altitude for other aircrafts to see. This information is relevant to avoid collisions in the air. [Technical Specification...]
